1. Coverage on Joint Surgery Replacement Workshop in ABP-1st
May, 2010; Knee implantation at Kolkata now
Age related illnesses are on the rise in India. Arthritis is an example of such a disease. It may either result in excruciating pain in bending or flexing of knees or complete loss of pelvic movement. There are many treatment options involving medication, dietary alteration and physiotherapy which can bring considerable relief to patients suffering from arthritis. Surgery, either corrective or replacement, remains the cornerstone for long-term cure and leading an active life. Although there are thousands of patients who would benefit from Joint Replacement surgery, a small fraction actually avail of treatment due to inadequate patient awareness and high cost of treatment which in turn is due to the high cost of implants. CGCRI (Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute), Kolkata, a constituent Laboratory of CSIR (Council for Scientific & Industrial Research) has developed a Bio-ceramic prosthesis which comes at a fraction of cost of foreign implants and offers much longer and trouble-free life-span, compared to conventional metal/polycarbonate prosthesis. It has been tested earlier at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. These prostheses are specifically designed to meet Indian patients’ postural requirements. These prostheses will benefit patients suffering from knee or Hip Joint problems at a Joint Replacement Workshop organized at a hospital located in fringes of Kolkata on 23rd & 24th May, as announced by hospital’s Director & CEO, Dr. Satadal Saha.

Dr. Kaushik Sarkar was present among other Orthopaedic surgeons. The two hour long surgery was witnessed by many famous orthopaedic surgeons of West Bengal. Four patients were operated during the two day workshop. Among them three patients underwent total knee replacement surgery and one patient Total Hip Replacement surgery. The bio-ceramic prosthesis are cheaper and affordable, durable due to less wear & tear of bio-ceramic and adaptable as per the Indian behaviour and habits. CGCRI Director Prof. Indranil Manna and scientist Dr. Debabrata Basu present during the Workshop opined that the Bio-ceramic prosthesis adapted as per the behavioural patterns and working habits of our people will provide relief to Arthritis patients rendered almost disabled and bring them to safety from the clutches of handicap. There is no known etiology of the diseases, till date. However, the deformities are thought to be hereditary and can also be attributed to genes. 12. Coverage on launch of Rectal Clinic in Bartaman- 30th December, 2010; Laparoscopic surgery for colon cancers
Jubilant Kalpataru Hospital in a press conference concluded on 21st December, 2010 at Press Club, Kolkata announced the launch of a specialized clinic for Rectal Diseases at the hospital. The Doctors present in the conference stressed the ever increasing demands for awareness, early diagnosis and management of Rectal diseases. Rectal diseases are very common in the community, but there is gross under-reporting of the problem due to embarrassment, as examination involves privacy issues and misconceptions viz. surgery is the only treatment, there are chances of relapse after the surgery and surgery is painful. Therefore, a Specialized Clinic for Rectal Diseases, which provides 360 degree care for all forms of rectal diseases, including patient education and spreading awareness, is going to be a value-added proposition. With the launch of this specialized clinic, including a team of highly trained doctors, amenities for routine rectal surgery, reconstructive surgery, laparoscopic surgery, diagnostic and therapeutic infrastructure all at a relatively low cost, Jubilant Kalpataru Hospital has become a centre for comprehensive care for Rectal Diseases
